Together For As Long As We Can

The other couples had at least made a show of slow-dancing, but these two were motionless, clinging to each other in perfect, almost photographic stillness. They knew that this was their last night together, so they had to make it count. After tomorrow, there was no guarantee that they would ever meet again. They were clinging to each other so tight that there wasn’t an atom of space between the two. For all anyone could tell, they were one. Their bodies and souls were connected, intertwined, melded together. If only this could last. As they stood there, Sarah remembered the day they met. Freshman year. She now recalls it as the best day of her life, but in the moment she couldn’t have hated Becca more. When she walked into the class that first day, there was just something about Becca that irritated her. She had that smug look on her face as if she already had all of life planned out (and it turns out that she really did). But just the way she sat there irritated her. There was an instant dislike between them, but they were put together for every single assignment because they were the top of the class. They learned to deal with the dislike and were professional with each other while working. As the time went on, the dislike started to go away and be replaced with a kind of friendship. The next year, they had the class again but with more talented people, so they didn’t have to work together as often. Junior year is when the love started to grow. Becca started hanging out with Sarah and her friends more until there wasn’t a moment that they were separated. One day at lunch, a switch was flipped and the friendship turned more romantic. They ended up dating each other because neither of them could think of a reason not to. It was a wonderful time full of laughter and adventure. They spent every weekend together despite Sarah’s mother not knowing about them dating. Sarah taught Becca how to accept love, and Becca showed Sarah that she was a good person and deserved love. the rollercoaster romance rushed by until it hit the end of the track. The end of the track was Prom. Motionless on the dance floor. Becca was leaving to pursue her life in New York, and Sarah was stuck in California. The rush of love was ending because the universe was forcing them to end it. They didn’t want the night to end because that meant the end of them.  There was hope that they would stay together, and reconnect when Sarah was able to make it to New York, but there was no guarantee. Their love felt like they were meant to be together forever, and they couldn’t help the feeling of loss. So they clung to each other until the music faded away into nothingness.
